Big birds don't hide
The ostrich is the largest bird in the world, and we house nine of them in the main and retirement pastures. That's about 2500 pounds of two-toed fury total. These flightless wonders can run 40 mph and defend themselves with a powerful kick.

It's not true that ostriches bury their heads in the sand. This belief may have started because of their sleeping posture. When lying down they lay their head and neck flat on the ground. Some farmers even have guard-ostriches instead of dogs. They run in circles around the herd keeping predators out.

How they live
Our males and females live separately. The eggs they lay are each equal in volume to two dozen chicken eggs. And some people do eat them. At meal time, they eat pelleted feed.
