Our Herd
The white and light brown coloring provides perfect desert camouflage for scimitars. You might have an easier time spotting the herd of 40 scimitar-horned oryx here. Hunting, competition with livestock, and droughts have eradicated them in the wild. We maintain a Species Survival Plan breeding herd in their own enclosure, and hold additional males for future use in the program.

How they behave
If they are left near the gemsbok, they will hybridize, so we must keep them separated. Otherwise, they don't mingle with other animals. They sleep during heat of day and graze for food. They are quite shy and will not approach vehicles.
